Reishi Supplements - What you should know
ORGANOTECH® REISHI WANTS YOU TO KNOW
Since its introduction in January, 1991, ORGANOTECH Reishi mushroom supplement tablets have become the leader in what several herbalists are calling the health food of the new century - Reishi mushrooms. The success of ORGANOTECH Reishi Mushroom Capsules and Mushroom Supplement Tablets has triggered a wave of the sincerest form of industry flattery, and several companies have jumped on the bandwagon with a wide range of products claiming to contain Reishi mushrooms.
As more companies compete for the rapidly growing Reishi market, questions continue to arise as to the difference between ORGANOTECH Reishi mushroom capsules and tablets and the other health food products on the market that call themselves Reishi.
ORGANOTECH wants you to know that all “Reishi” products are not equal. Comparing ORGANOTECH Reishi to cheaper “Reishi” products is much like comparing apples to oranges. They simply are not the same, and you need to know the difference.
Some of these “other” Reishi products have beautiful pictures of mature Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) mushrooms on their labels and retail for $10.00 - $15.00 per bottle of 100 capsules, said to contain 400-600 mg each.
From examining several of these “other” Reishi products in its laboratory and talking with leading mycologists (mushroom experts), ORGANOTECH has learned that practically all of the “other” cheap Reishi products are made from Reishi mycelium mixed with grain. Even though these mycelium products do not contain a single microgram of mature Reishi mushroom, deceptive labels lead consumers to believe that each capsule contains several hundred milligrams of mature Reishi mushroom.
Mycelium is the stage in Reishi’s life cycle between the spore, a unicellular reproductive body produced by the mature mushroom, and the mature mushroom itself. To produce Reishi mycelium products, a small amount of active mycelium is added to sterilized soybeans, rice, or other grains in a water slurry and allowed to grow until all of the surface area of the grain is covered by the thin white Reishi mycelium. The amount of mycelium in this slurry is still very small in comparison to the amount of grain on which it grows because the mycelium does not penetrate the seed interior. After the mycelium has colonized the surface of the grain, the entire mixture is dried and ground, grain and all. The ground mycelium and grain mix is placed in capsules that are then sold as “Premium Reishi Mushroom”. Some companies also refer to this product as “Reishi mycelium biomass”, but none tells consumers on the product label exactly how much of each capsule is Reishi mycelium and how much is grain.
Several points need to be kept in mind when comparing Reishi mycelium products to
ORGANOTECH Reishi:
1. Only whole mature Reishi mushrooms contain the full complement of compounds that have been prized in traditional Chinese and Japanese herbology for hundreds of years. The use of Reishi mycelium as a health food is a relatively new application.
2. A capsule containing 400-600 mg of dried, ground Reishi mycelium and the grain on which it grew, is predominantly ground grain with a very small percentage of dried Reishi mycelium, and no mature Reishi mushroom.
3. Although Reishi mycelium does contain some of the same compounds found in the mature Reishi mushroom, it does not contain all of them in the same concentrations as the mature Reishi fruiting body used in ORGANOTECH Reishi tablets.
4. Growing Reishi mycelium in vats of grain slurry is much faster and cheaper than taking the Reishi mycelium through the next growing stage to produce mature mushrooms. Growing mature Reishi mushrooms from mycelium requires 6-8 additional months in large, shaded greenhouses with sophisticated sterility, temperature, and humidity controls.
5. The additional cost and time needed to organically grow mature Reishi mushrooms accounts for ORGANOTECH Reishi’s retail price which is somewhat higher than products made from grain and mycelium.
6. ORGANOTECH puts 100 mg of mature, dried, red Reishi mushrooms, ground microscopically fine to assure maximum absorption and digestibility, in each ORGANOTECH Reishi tablet and capsule.
7. Mature red Reishi mushrooms have a distinctive, bitter after-taste caused by the triterpenoids (ganodermic acids) contained in the mature mushroom. If the bitter after-taste is not present, neither is the mature Reishi. Soybean meal does have a sweet mild flavor, but soybeans are not Reishi.
8. In Japan where Reishi products have been popular for generations, capsules or tablets made from the whole mature mushroom generally contain 80 mg or less per capsule or tablet, and enjoy strong sales at retail prices of $150-$300 per bottle of 120 tablets or capsules.
9. ORGANOTECH offers consumers a choice the finest, organically Reishi mushrooms just the way they want them in either vegetarian tablets or in Kosher gelatin capsules.
There are also Reishi products made from chemical extractions of either the mycelium or the mature mushroom. These chemical extracts change the natural concentration of ingredients found in the whole mature mushroom and leaves behind the compounds that do not dissolve in the chemical solvent used in the extraction process.
Manufacturer reports that whole mature Reishi is indigestible simply are not true. This type of blatant misinformation is designed to mislead customers to choose mycelium and chemical extract products instead of the natural whole Reishi mushrooms contained in ORGANOTECH Reishi mushroom supplement tablets and capsules.
Consumer satisfaction with ORGANOTECH Reishi products is extremely high, with long term repeat purchases running between 60 and 70 percent.
If you want the finest, mature, red Reishi, buy ORGANOTECH Reishi capsules and mushroom supplement tablets.
