Reishi Research
Active Organic Compounds
Reishi contains two major groups of organic compounds that are responsible for its efficacy: ganodermic acids, classified as triterpenoids, which are compounds similar to steroid hormones; and polysaccharides, which are long chains of naturally-occurring sugar molecules. Dr. William Stavinoha, Chief Pharmacologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, reported the results of his three-year research study on Reishi’s anti-inflammatory activity at the Third Academic/Industry Joint Conference in Sapporo, Japan in August, 1990. Dr. Stavinoha’s research found that “the anti-inflammatory activity (of Reishi) was comparable to hydrocortisone at 5mg.” He concludes his research paper by saying, “No untoward effects of Ganderma lucidum therapy were noted. Thus Ganderma lucidum exhibits strong anti-inflammatory activity in two tests for pharmacological activity.”
Treatment Studies
Scientists in China and Japan (Kirigaya, Matsumoto) have published studies reporting the successful use of Reishi in the treatment of the following
-
Chronic Bronchitis - Beneficial effects were noted within two weeks of patients’ initiation of taking Reishi.
-
Cardiovascular System - Reinforcement of cardiac functions, increased flow in the coronary arteries, sedative and analgesic actions, increased appetite, better sleep, and improved stamina were among the benefits to patients with cardiovascular problems.
-
Hyperlimpemia - Levels of cholesterol, neutral fats and betariboprotein were brought to normal levels in over 70 percent of the test subjects.
-
Hepatitis - Activation of the liver function with a favorable effect on the spleen, led to effective treatment of several forms of hepatitis when combined with rest and proper nutrition.
-
Hypertension - High blood pressure was brought under control and maintained at normal levels.
-
Allergic Disease - Excellent results were in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, bronchitis (asthma), urticaria, and conjunctivitis.
-
Cancer Treatment Side Effects - Cancer patients who were undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapies experienced a reduction of discomfort and other side effects.
- Other Effects - Reishi reduced the number of migraine attacks as well as severity in migraine sufferers. In addition, stomach discomfort, including that caused by gastric ulcers was greatly diminished.
Whole Reishi Mushroom Supplements
Reishi is used in a variety of forms from powders and tablets made from the whole mushroom, to teas, hot water or alcohol extracts, as well as in mixtures made from the mycelium stage in the growth cycle. However, extracts and teas made from Reishi take only some of the beneficial compounds from the mushroom, leaving all the others behind. Scientific analysis of Reishi mycelium show it to be very low or entirely lacking in several of the most important compounds found in the mature mushroom. For practically all applications, it is far preferable to take Reishi in the whole mature form, thereby insuring consumption of the entire range of its beneficial ingredients.
Organotech® Reishi Mushroom products are made of whole, fully mature mushrooms.
